Local Elections, May 2011

During May the political focus is on the local and regional elections, which take place on 22nd. National parties will be hoping for a foretaste of their desired national election result, as this must take place within a year. All local municipal councils will be re-elected and most regional governments also.

In the Basque Country attention has been focussed already on the hopes of the 'Basque Left', groups close to the terror organisation ETA, which would like to be involved in politics, but who have been consistently locked out since a new law outlawed parties which support terrorism. Elsewhere, local issues will be less important. However, the electorate is tired of having to vote for parties which are shown to be open to corruption or simply turn their backs on voters as soon as elections have passed.
