Water reserves:
[Image 59???]Three quarters of the way through another 'hidrological year', we thank God for water! Many parts of Spain missed out on the autumn rains, which are normally the key to filling the reservoirs for the following summer, but reserves were way down in late April. Then May became a record breaking month for rain in many regions, particularly severely hit Catalonia. All this rain chaos has come just in time for the Zaragoza Water Expo! At 4th March, the level -which should have been far higher- was 44.9% total and 41% drinking water. By 17th June the levels stood at 60.2% and 53.1%, sufficient in most areas to face a long, hot summer.
[Image 75???]The neediest parts of the country have had some good rainfall, leaving just Jaen suffering with 9.4% of its maximum reserve. Catalonia had just 14.1% in April, but now has 65.1% to face the summer. Meanwhile, the south eastern Costa Blanca remains on alert. The Jucar river reservoirs have 15.4% of capacity, the Segura (Mar Menor) has 22.4% and the upper Tajo area, Spain's largest reservoir system, which could feed many parts of the south and east, also has just 15.4%, allowing some small transfers to other basins, such as the Jucar and Segura.
Spain is one of Europe's top 'green' generators, partly due to the large number of reservoirs. But this green potential remains at the mercy of the weather.
In Mallorca, falls of over 200mm in the mountains on 15th April (2007) brought the reservoirs (only 2!) to overflowing for the first time in a decade. A year on, despite much autumn rain, reserves were back to 80% and gradually falling. After late rains in May and quick growth of grasses, forest fires are feared this summer.
