Football (soccer): League Barcelona leads league after 8th round, but lost to Madrid in 7th; Champions' League Madrid's fortunes turn with victory over Steaua in Bucharest, Valencia won and Barcelona lost to Chelsea; European Cup Spain lost to Sweden in European Cup qualifiers - may now not go through.
Motor: F1 Fernando Alonso 2nd in Brazil to take 2006 drivers' championship- Schumacher made gallant effort to catch him, despite set-backs. Bikes: Valencia, last race of season: Alvaro Bautista World Champion in 125, with hector faubel winning race, Jorge Lorenzo WC in 250, Hayden snatched GP WC for Repsol team after Rossi fell - pedrosa came in 4th to take 5th place in championship. Rally Dani Sordo 4th in championship.
Tennis Madrid Masters Federer won, last Spaniard Nadal lost to Berdych in 1/4 finals; Davis Cup Spain beat Italy thanks to Nadal; Wimbledon: Rafa Nadal was first male Spaniard for 40 years to reach the final.

Basketball Madrid goes ahead in ACB league. Spain won Japan World Cup. Now awarded Spain's prestigious Principe de Asturias sport prize.. Women's team lost to Russia in 1/4 finals of their World Championship, but showed great improvement.
Cycling: Samuel Sanchez won Zurich classic - Sanchez helped Valverde to podium in World Cup, keeping lead group just ahead of sprinters over last km; La Vuelta Alejandro Valverde just beaten by Vinokourov in final days; Tour Oscar Pereiro of Islas Baleares/ Credit Agricole ended 2nd with Carlos Sastre 4th. But now, with Floyd Landis shown to have a positive doping test, Pereiro may be declared winner.
Lawn Hockey: Bronze for Spain in Germany World championships; ladies beaten by Argentina to take 4th place in Madrid World championships. Roller Hockey: silver in women's world cup.
