Intellectuals and artists denounce president Aznar's 'democratic Counter-Reformation'
Friday, 13th February! A group of intellectuals and artists have formed the Assembly of Democratic Intervention (AID in Spanish), a campaign against president Aznar's 'democratic Counter-Reformation'. Many well-known musicians, film producers, etc., are among the group of people who consider that president aznar and the governing Partido Popular have introduced reforms in the way government works harking back to the Franco dictatorship (which ended on his death in 1975).
Whether the Spanish population agrees with this left-wing thesis will be tested in part on 14th March at the national elections. Currently, the mood is for a level of change, but not to the extent of a sufficient swing to the left to allow a Socialist/left wing coalition to take over.
Evangelicals have certainly been concerned about the way agreements with the government have been frozen and relationships much more difficult over these past 8 years. The Spanish government is clearly seen to be much closer to the Roman Catholic church in some of its most traditionalist positions and some members of the cabinet are also members of the Catholic organisation Opus Dei.
