Busy travel weekend as Spain returns to work.
30 August. The last August holidaymakers are busy packing. Between today and tomorrow they have to get back home from their holiday homes and hotels. Over 5 million road traffic movements are expected this weekend, extra train services are being laid on and flights are all full.
At Palma, Mallorca, today is likely to break all the records with over 1,000 flights and 145,000 passengers using the airport on one day alone, 350,000 voer the weekend. After early warnings of a collapse in the market, late bookings brought the numbers up to last year's records, with more Spaniards and British than previous years.
As usual at such weekends, the Civil Guard road patrols are out in force to help keep the traffic moving towards the big cities. Accidents are feared, although the weather is reasonably good.
