Other major headlines recently have included: open boat with corpses of 10 would-be immigrants found adrift 500km south of Canaries, later lost; 18th Zapatero gave interview on TVE -3.5 million saw broadcast- Zapatero's willingness to negotiate an end to the violence warmly received by police and other groups; ETA hit again on 17th in Bilbao with powerful car bomb, making peace negotiation unlikely; Algerian arrested on terrorist charges ordered by judge Garzón; judges' council warns against constitutional irregularities in bill on homosexual 'marriage; Catholic Episcopal Conference accepts recommendation of condoms to reduce Aids risk - then forced to withdraw statement; waves up to 8m smash cars and windows on sea fronts along north coast; 5% of young people are now immigrants; Spain's prime archeological treasure, the Dame of Elche, may be moved definitively back to Elche (Alicante) from Madrid; Spanish support ship Galicia has left on aid mission to Sumatra - it has a highly equipped military hospital on board, as well as troops, vehicles and 60 tonnes of aid; Camorra boss detained in Barcelona; Briton Tony King, convicted Costa del Sol rapist and murderer, again in dock in disappearance case; soprano Victoria de los Angeles has died in Barcelona; gas explosion in Madrid block of flats - 3 dead; explosion in Burgos warehouse - 10 now dead; Lehedakari Ibarretxe met president Zapatero 13th to discuss his home rule plan for the Basque Country - much dissension over the project both at national and regional level- Zapatero refused to accept the plan; Spanish troops and NGOs established in Indonesia for aid operation; plan to send condemned fishing boats to Tsumani nations - EU ban meant they should be scrapped; man condemned to 40 years for ETA murder of 4 Civil guards 25 years ago - having been extradited from Venezuela; 72 women died at the hands of their partners in 2004, 3 already in 2005.

Football (soccer): A new book by Spanish evangelical leader Jaime Fernandez is aiming to reach English priemiership footballers - more at http://www.protestantedigital.com/hemeroteca/052/spain.htm#5 ; Barça now has two evangelicals, as Edmilson has joined Sylvinho there - both are Brazilians and members of Athletes for Christ - however, Edmilson is sadly injured and will be half the season off the field; Liverpool has signed Madrid's Fernando Morientes to make it almost more Spanish than English; Beckham finally playing well; Barcelona continues to lead League, Barcelona and Madrid still in Champions' League; top teams out of Copa del Rey.
Motor: Paris - Dakar Marc Coma 2nd in bikes; the deaths of riders José Manuel Pérez 'El Carni', and Fabrizio Meoni caused great sadness in this race F1 R25 gets a new reputation as Fernando Alonso test drives the new Renault F1 car in Valencia, a very distant relation to the ageing top Renault model of the '80s!
Cycling: the 2005 Vuelta Ciclista de España course is now available at: http://www.lavuelta.com/05/ingles/recorrido/mapa.asp?e=1 , this time it includes Don Quijote's stomping grounds on the 400th anniversary of the first edition of the world's most famous novel; the 2004 edition was one of the most exciting for years, with the final day's chrono into Madrid determining the winner, Roberto Heras; this was Heras's 3rd victory in the race;
Tennis, Davis Cup final: Spain beat USA in Seville to win the salad bowl; Australia Nadal, last Spaniard, beaten by Hewitt in last 16 (4th round); ladies all out in first round, bit better in doubles.
